e-bikes around the world, have to meet the regulations and conditions for the country they are used in. This is logical and usually accepted.
The legal requirements for e-bikes, are as follows: –
e-bikes are referred to as “Electrically Operated Pedal Cycles” (EAPC’s)
You must be 14 years of age or older to use one on the streets. You do not need a licence to use one and it does not require to be taxed or insured. To be categorised as an EAPC, it must have pedals that can be used as in a normal bicycle. It must also show either the power output or the manufacturer of the motor, plus either the battery voltage or the e-bikes maximum speed. The maximum power output of the motor shall not exceed 250 Watts. The cyclist should not be able to propel the cycle once it reaches a speed exceeding 15.5mph
Tricycles also, count as EAPC’s
e-bikes are classed as normal bikes and can be used in the same way. Anything that does not meet the EAPC is classed as a motorcycle or moped and requires to be Regs can be read here and taxed. We cannot understand why the sites I reviewed says that e-bikes need to be taxed? e-cars do not require taxing according to the GOV.UK web page, you also require a driving licence to use one a crash helmet is also required e-bike are usually made with motor ratings up to 750 watts, hence much faster. These are legal in the UK, but only on private land, not public roads, unless registered as a motor cycle or moped. If in doubt please contact our team at Free advice
