What are the origins of our beloved Quad I thought I would delve into the history thereof, wow what a journey that turned out to be. So, this is broken down into dates and counties as everyone seems to claim a version as the ATV evolved. Here I shall try to explain the history and production as these machines developed to the e-quad we have today.
The British version
Off Toad (ATV) Quad Biking provides nothing but absolute excitement, which makes it one of the most popular outdoor adventure activities. But we had to ask the question, just where did it all start, what was the inspiration? Read on, and you’ll find out just that!
Back in 1893, British cycling company Royal Enfield created a four wheeled vehicle that was designed as a replacement for horses, used to pull carriages for many years previously. It was known as a ‘Quadricycle. However, that was just the start, when mass produced cars were just bursting onto the scene. So, it can be said that off-road Quad was in British? We think not, so we need to take a look at Asia: –
Japan 66 years later
So, we jump forward a few years and halfway round the world, to the next major change this came came with the arrival of Honda. We understand that after 1959. The company’s founder Mr Soichiro Honda realised that he could not drive his car due to a petrol/oil shortage after second world war. So, what followed could be the origins ATV? His ingenious idea was to attach a small engine to his bicycle. The idea grew and was passed the then, Honda Technical Research Institute for further development.
Further down the line
Suzuki, their origins were a Loom weaving manufacturer until 1930 breaking in to the car industry. But they are credited with creating Quad Bikes as we know them today back in 1983. The first ATV as we know them today. So, a big thank you to Mr Michio Suzuki for bring us our Quads.
ATVs The Evolution e-Quad
So, we have covered the petrol head quad we all love. So let us run our eyes over the e-Quad, yes give it a chance. Now this is an interesting UK positive story. Don’t knock it until you try it, as they say! This Electric Quad, brings the power into another level, it has a 5kKw brushless motor that is capable of huge power and torque to tow heavy loads like the trailer and cross the most difficult and rough terrains. This combination along with a 60v 100Ah Li battery gives a good distance at good speeds. Almost silent, we find this good news for Farms as these are wildlife and animal friendly. A nice ride without fear polluting the environment (That could be our next Blog Pros & Cons of Li) Well, we had the chance to ride one of these off road, and yes fast fun delivered good power with plenty of pull on the hills. All in all, a nice machine.
The In-between Bits We didn’t overlook the tri-cart said to be the idea behind our loved ATVs or Quads, but as the title states they only have 3 wheels not 4. So, we ignored them totally, sorry tri-cart enthusiasts.
